Pigeon Bay is situated approximately one and a half hour’s drive from Christchurch, a short distance off the main Akaroa highway, on Banks Peninsula. (Turn left at the Hilltop, first bay on the left.)
About seven kilometres long from the heads to the beach and facing due North, Pigeon Bay is exposed to good Easterly sailing winds on relatively flat water. As well as boasting one of the best sailing waters in Canterbury, there are good launching facilities and a large grassed and sheltered rigging area. The Pigeon Bay camping ground is approximately 300m from the rigging area.
The Pigeon Bay Boating Club has its ‘historic’ clubhouse right at the water’s edge next to the wharf and has a mixed fleet of trailer yachts and centreboard dinghies. There are club Optimists available for tuition.
The club regularly hosts class championships each season as well as regular club sailing weekends. There is a good social atmosphere and the club is always happy to make visitors welcome.

Waimakariri Sailing and Power Boat Club (Inc)
PO Box 164, Kaiapoi
Email: info@sailwaimak.org.nz
Website: www.sailwaimak.org.nz
The Waimakariri Sailing and Power Boat Club was founded in 1927, and since then we have been enjoying sailing on the superb lower reaches of the Waimakariri River at Kairaki. One of our key success factors is that we have always been a family oriented club and we do our best to make newcomers and visitors welcome at the club.
We are proud to cater for sailors of all abilities. We run Learn-to-Sail courses for beginners (children and adults) and follow up by offering plenty of formal and informal coaching in the finer points of sailing to give you the confidence to become a competent sailor.
The club has a long list of champion sailors in its history and some still sail today. Many of our Learn-to-Sail children have gone on to compete in Optimist, P-Class and Starling competitions and have done well at National events. We are lucky to also have a strong adult fleet of sailors at the club sailing mainly single-handed Zephyrs and double-handed Sunbursts.
Our mission: To promote sailing to all ages within the community by creating an environment that fosters friendship, participation and achievement
