Paula England, Matthew Hern and Michael Glassford were part of a strong New Zealand contingent competing at the 2008 Laser Radial Worlds held at Takapuna Beach, Auckland from March 22nd to 29th. 198 sailors from 25 countries were represented at this six day regatta.
Paula, Matthew and Michael’s efforts were assisted by generous sponsorship from AMI, the funds being used primarily for the hire of a 4.9 metre support boat thus ensuring the three sailors welfare during the regatta.
In appreciation of AMI’s sponsorship the young sailors proudly placed AMI logo stickers on their boats and trolleys making them readily identifiable throughout the regatta. They could also be easily identified wearing their AMI t-shirts at all pre race events.
The calibre of the international competitors was extremely high with the majority having previously competed at other international regattas. The sailors were split into three fleets – open men, youth women and youth men. Two hour long races per day were completed. The long races, combined with sailing to and from the course and waiting for fleet starts, meant that the sailors were on the water from 10.30 am until approximately 3.30pm each day. A northerly wind ranging from 10 – 20 knots, together with 1 metre swell, meant conditions were ideal for sailing.
The youth women fleet consisted of 38 sailors from 12 countries. Paula made a flying start with a 12th placing in the first race and a 13th on the second day. Her overall placing was a creditable 23rd. Paula was 5th New Zealand youth women which cemented her place in the NZ Youth Zone Development Squad.
Matthew was in the 86 strong youth male fleet, and competed in a four day qualifying series pending the split into gold and silver fleets for the final two days racing. Matthew narrowly missed the cut for the gold fleet. However, on the last day he led the silver fleet from start to finish for first place in race 11, thus gaining 11th place overall in the silver fleet.
Michael competed in the mens open fleet consisting of 71 competitors. Being the youngest in this fleet, Michael found the competition tough. However being young and fit had its advantages as the series wore on and the winds strengthened. His best day was in the heaviest weather where he finished 34th in race 7. Michael’s overall placing was 57th.
Paula, Matthew, Michael and their respective families would like to thank AMI for its sponsorship support. The three young sailors have returned to Christchurch with a commitment to maximise their potential in future national and international sailing events.
