Many of the Canterbury Yacht Clubs offer a learn to sail programme for both adults and children over the summer sailing season (September through until April). Contact your local yacht club for more information regarding their upcoming courses. There are also a number of commercial providers offering learn to sail, and practical boating courses:

Canterbury Sailing School

Jack Tar Sailing

Jack Tar sailing offers charters and learn to sail courses on a classic Gaff Rigged Keelboat. Mike is a Yachting New Zealand certified level 3 seamanship instructor and offers NZQA Unit Standards for Sailing.

Coastguard Boating Education
Coastguard Boating Education is New Zealand's leading provider of recreational boating courses, with more than 40 core and specialty programmes available for all levels of knowledge and ability.

Coastguard has over 1800 volunteers in New Zealand. Volunteers are trained to handle the many emergency situations that can occur out on the water.
